According to Faith Forum from the website Elev8, “In the early 20th century, Sunday church services provided African American women who worked as domestic servants or in other subservient roles the only real chance to break away from their drab, dreary workday uniforms. They favored bright colors and textured fabric — the bolder the better, really — and topped their outfits off with a flamboyant hat, or “crown.”
I remember Mother’s Day from wa-a-ay back in the day when all of the women in the church would dress up and then set it off in hats, fur stoles, and high heels. Their looks were mesmerizing and as eye-catching as any Hollywood movie star’s. Easter was for the children, but Mother’s Day was a woman’s day to shine. I remember the famous, frothy, ice cold frappes served at the Mother’s Day Teas and the Fashion Shows put on with clothes supplied by Evans and Fashion Plate clothiers.
Hats aren’t as prevalent as they once were, but there are still a handful of fashion-forward Divas who keep the tradition alive. My hat is off to them for being an example for chic young women coming after us.
Just a little bit of nostalgia for this special day. Please, enjoy the day and accept that the world recognizes the hard work which goes into parenting, if it’s done right.
PS. If your son is a thug or a gangbanger and you know he has a gun, put on your big girl panties and make him QUIT! YOU THE MOMMA!
